New generations poll: Pinoy kids are techie, wired, and can influence buying

The New Generations 2012 Survey, recently conducted by the Cartoon Network of Turner International Asia Pacific Ltd., showed that Filipino children have more access to the internet, gadgets, and related technology, compared with their peers in more developed countries in the Asia-Pacific regiion..

The study also revealed that children in these parts, aged seven to 14, are clear about what they want and don’t want and can influence the buying patterns of their parents and other adults around them.

They are found to have firm preferences on what gadgets they like to use, what TV shows they like to watch, and what activities they want to engage in, according to Duncan Morris, vice president for market research and development for Turner International.

The New Generations Survey was based on interviews with 1000 randomly-selected children  from Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, and Metro Davao across all  socio-economic classes from A to D.

The survey further shows that two-thirds of the children in the Philippines own a mobile phone and more than half live in Internet-enabled homes. Those that do not have internet access at home get connected by going to internet cafes.

The Internet has become an increasingly large virtual playground for Filipino kids, with 82 per cent of those with computers at home, going on line at least once a week.

These findings show the next generation of Filipinos to be among the most connected in the whole of  the Asia-Pacific.

Nonetheless, contrary to popular view, children in this country still pursue physical activity.  The survey shows they crave outdoor sports, dancing, going to theme parks, among others, about as much as they go for virtual activities .
