January may be start of the year but for business owners, it is the most hectic month of the year. It is during this month that business must submit their income tax documents, conduct inventories and the most important – renew their business permits.

Most business permits expire on the 31th of December (save for those issued on a quarterly basis) and are required to be renewed before the end of  January.

Though this is the time of the year that businessmen and women often dread, business permit renewal need not be hard. Here are some tips that will make your yearly trip to the city hall less stressful and tiring, simple steps that will make it more bearable for you.

1.       If possible, do not wait for the last day of filing. Renewal of Business Permits is usually for a month and the last few days are usually the ones with the longest lines and the most people. So to avoid penalties and long lines, renew your business permits as early as possible.

2.       Make sure that you have all the necessary documents (properly filled out application form, clearances, special permits, etc.) for renewal.  Remember, some businesses such as, rice retailers, bakeries and drug stores require special permits from the NFA and the BFAD before they can be issued business permits.  To avoid wasting time, make sure that you have the necessary documents and/or clearances onhand before trooping to the city hall.

3.       Make several copies of the required documents in case duplicate copies are needed. Photocopying services around city or municipal halls usually have long queues so having your copies done beforehand will help you save time.

4.       Be familiar with the process of renewal and/or application of new business permits before heading to your local city hall.  Knowing where to go and being familiar with the process will save you time.

Big cities such as Quezon City, Cebu, Gen. Trias, and Carmona have pages in their official websites that show you the steps on  how to apply for renewal of business permits. So it is wise to check out your city or municipality’s website before going to the  city/municipal hall for renewal of your business permits.

In the absence of a website, you could go beforehand and make yourself familiar with the process by studying the flow charts that are usually posted by the LGUs. That way, you won’t waste time asking for directions.

5.       Have the exact amount for the fees ready, plus some change.  Government offices usually have fast lanes for those who pay the exact amount.  These lanes are usually a lot faster than those who handle check payments.

6.       But most of all, to avoid long queues, start early.  Most government employees are more courteous early in the day and get  crankier as the day wears on. Starting early would mean you’re out of there before they become moody.

Finally, wear comfortable clothes and shoes when going on these errands. Also, don’t forget to rehydrate. Although snacks and refreshments are readily available, these items will be expensive. Bring enough refreshments so you won’t need to spend while you are standing in line.

This annual duty need not be a horror story, with the right tips and the right attitude, this year’s renewal will be a breeze.
