The University of the Philippines Institute for Small-Scale Industries (UP ISSI) marks the 50th year anniversary of its inception this year, with culminating activities to be held on November 25 at the UP ISSI Building, E. Jacinto Street, UP Campus, Diliman, Quezon City.

All staff, present and past, alumni, and friends and associates of the UP ISSI are invited to the anniversary event, which will start at 2 pm.

The UP ISSI was put up in 1966, initially as a special project between the Philippines and Netherlands Government.  In 1969, Republic 6041 established it as an organic unit of the University of the Philippines System.

Development planning in the 1960s was heavily biased towards big business; “think big” was particularly enticing to a young nation in a hurry to get rich.  ISSI breached this mindset as it pioneered in small-enterprise development through various training, research, extension and advocacy programs.

That today SME promotion has gained the status of national movement is a testimonial to the work of the ISSI and its staff.

The Small Enterprises Research and Development Foundation (SERDEF) was organized by UP ISSI management in 1976 to serve as private-sector counterpart in small industry promotion.

The event on November 25, which will be held from 3 pm until 9 pm, will gather the Institute’s officers and staff, past and present, as well as iyd  resource persons in various programs, project partners, training program alumni, friends and associates, and others who share with the ISSI Iitsthe SME development mission.

The activities will basically be a looking back at the ISSI’s history, renewing friendships and making new ones, and simply “having a blast.”  The programme will culminate in a dinner with music and other entertainment numbers.

Those interested to attend the event are requested to contact Ms. Ludy Cubillas at [email protected] or (02) 9206923 or 928-7077 loc 153.
