DTI to bat for e-commerce platform for MSMEs at APEC meet

The putting up of a single e-commerce platform for micro, small and medium enterprises across economies in the SEAN will be one of the measures the DTI will push when economic ministers meet in the APEC ministerial conference this May, according to Trade Secertary Gregory L. Domingo.

The ministerial meeting, dubbed as “APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade” will be held in Boracay.  Its agenda will include issues affecting MSMES as they operate and compete in the integrated ASEAN market.

The meeting will bring together prominent and influential figures in the global business and political communities.  As host country, the Philippines has declared it will put the global spotlight on MSMEs as the sector needing the most help in participating in a barrier-free marketplace.

Domingo said the platform will facilitate small businesses access to regional and global value chains.

As conceptualized, the e-commerce platform for MSMEs would outline Customs  rules, procedures, regulations and rules of origin, and other information needed to export.

“MSMEs are having a hard time exporting. A single platform wherein they can book their sales and with links to logistics will boost MSME trade across the region,” Domingo explained..

The Philippines will also suggest exemption from rules of origin requirements for MSMEs with shipments of $2,000 or less.

Domingo added that the thrust toward inclusive growth can only be realized if the small enterprises are helped to grow and expand their marketing reach.
