Dual training soon to be integrated in K-12 system

job-skills mismatch

Dual training will soon be integrated with the K to 12 curriculum, with the collaboration of the Department of Education (DepED) and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DTI).

Dual training combines practical, on-the-job, industry-based learning with theoretical methods.  It is expected to synchronize the output of the academe (the students’ acquired skills and knowhow) and the manpower requirements of business and industry.

The mismatch between skills of graduates and job requirements has been known, for decades,  to set back the efforts of the country to industrialize.

Under a memorandum of agreement signed recently, DepED and PCCI pledged to collaborate in developing and implementing activities and projects that will build up a pool of competent, employment-fit human resources  that can be readily absorbed by industrial and commercial enterprises.

Some of the joint activities the two institutions committed to are:  the identification of appropriate facilities required to maximize the benefits of the K to 12 curriculum for students in the technical-vocational-livelihood (TVL) track;  and putting up of an accreditation system wherein accredited enterprises can take in  senior students in the TVL track for on-the-job training.

The PCCI also agreed to put up safeguards to make sure that the employer-businesses involved will train the students in accordance with K to 12 learning competencies and standards.
